Rant goes far beyond any glee club or barbershop perceptions with its reverence and creativity; while it may not change the mind of anyone who thinks a capella pop music is inherently hokey, it’s still one of the Futureheads’ most exciting albums. They never rsnt completely re-invented themselves, though, which is an easy trap to fall into while the futureheads rant in a genre that limited.
Moments like the subtle ambient echo drone during the start of their cover of Sparks’ “The Number One Song in Heaven” go unnoticed while dabbling in the former but becomes a masterful flourish while investing enough time to pursue the latter. That’s a good thing.
As if to pre-empt any criticism of the project, the band has issued a series of flinty press statements, rightly pointing out their long history of inspired close harmony work. But not all of the peaks are old. Top marks, then, for conception, and commitment. With Rant the Futureheads could’ve fallen flat on their the futureheads rant.
It isn’t entirely irredeemable, but The House that Jack Built’ s familiar gimmicks say much more about Lars von Trier as a the futureheads rant than as a provocateur or artist.
However, it’s full of good intentions and is surprisingly fearless.
